Reefer Cargo Dubai: One Unbroken Cold Chain, Origin to Destination

Temperature-sensitive freight does not forgive a single weak link. A vaccine consignment held on a hot apron for forty minutes, a reefer container plugged in late at the quay, a chilled seafood pallet cross-docked without a data logger — any one of these can turn a compliant shipment into a rejected, written-off loss. For pharmaceuticals, food and other perishables, the value is not only in the goods but in the documented, unbroken chain of custody that proves those goods stayed within their approved temperature band from the moment they left the shipper to the moment they reached the consignee.

Quality Express Freight has spent 40 years moving cargo through Dubai, and temperature-controlled work sits at the demanding end of that experience. From our base at Green & View, Barsha Heights (Tecom), we plan and execute reefer cargo Dubai movements by air, sea and road, on door-to-door lanes to the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, the GCC and the wider Middle East. This page explains how we protect the cold chain — the temperature bands we work to, the equipment and packaging we use, the customs realities at Jebel Ali and Dubai's airports, and the documentation that lets your quality team sign off with confidence.

The Temperature Bands We Work To

Cold chain is not a single temperature — it is a set of validated ranges, and matching the right band to the right commodity is the first decision on any booking. The bands we plan around are the industry-standard ones:

  • Deep-frozen (−18°C and below): ice cream, frozen bakery, long-life seafood and meat.
  • Frozen (−25°C to −18°C): the working range for most frozen food programmes.
  • Chilled (0°C to +4°C): fresh meat, poultry, dairy, cut flowers and much fresh produce.
  • Pharma cool-chain (+2°C to +8°C): vaccines, insulin, biologics and many diagnostics.
  • Controlled room temperature / CRT (+15°C to +25°C): a large share of finished pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals that must be protected from both heat and freezing.
  • Produce-specific setpoints (e.g. +12°C to +14°C): bananas and other chill-sensitive fruit that spoil if taken too cold.

Getting this right matters because "cold" is not always the goal — freezing a CRT pharmaceutical or a chill-sensitive fruit is as damaging as letting it overheat. We confirm the setpoint, the acceptable excursion window and the required monitoring interval in writing before the cargo moves, so there is no ambiguity between shipper, carrier and consignee.

Reefer Containers and the Ocean Cold Chain

For volume perishables and larger pharma programmes, sea freight remains the workhorse, and reefer containers are its backbone. Working through Jebel Ali (DP World / JAFZA), we arrange refrigerated 20ft and 40ft High Cube reefers for full-container loads, with the setpoint, ventilation and — where required — controlled-atmosphere settings specified on the booking. For smaller volumes we can consolidate temperature-controlled LCL where a suitable service exists, though for most cool-chain pharma we generally recommend a dedicated reefer to avoid co-loading risk.

The vulnerable moments in ocean cold chain are the gaps between plug points: the drayage leg, the terminal dwell, the vessel connection. We manage these with pre-trip inspection (PTI) of the reefer unit before stuffing, priority plug-in scheduling at the port, and genset support for road legs so the unit never runs dark. Whether your terms are FCL or LCL, and whichever Incoterms 2020 rule governs the sale, we map exactly where our responsibility begins and ends so nothing falls through a handover. You can read more about the container options on our FCL shipping and LCL shipping pages, and about the wider ocean service via sea freight.

Air Freight for Pharma and High-Value Perishables

When transit time is the deciding factor — vaccines, biologics, fresh seafood, premium produce, clinical samples — air is the mode. Dubai is exceptionally well positioned for cool-chain air freight, with two major gateways in DXB and DWC (Al Maktoum) feeding a dense network of long-haul carriers.

For temperature-sensitive air cargo we work with active and passive solutions: active containers with their own powered refrigeration for the highest-value pharma lanes, and validated passive shippers — insulated boxes qualified with phase-change materials or gel/dry-ice packs — for shorter durations and smaller volumes. The critical discipline in air is the tarmac and terminal exposure: build-up in a temperature-controlled area, minimised apron time, and cool dollies where available. We coordinate these touchpoints and align them with the airline's own cool-chain handling so the band is held from acceptance to uplift. Our full air capability is described on the air freight page, and time-critical movements can be escalated through express freight.

Validated Packaging and the Last Mile

Equipment is only half the story; packaging is what protects the cargo in the gaps the equipment cannot cover. We help specify the right passive system for the lane — the insulation grade, the coolant type and quantity, and the pre-conditioning of that coolant — matched to the expected duration and ambient profile. Dry ice, in particular, needs careful handling: it is classed as a dangerous good for air transport (UN 1845) and must be declared and quantified correctly, which we manage alongside our dangerous goods desk.

The last mile is where many cold chains break. Our door-to-door cargo service closes that gap with refrigerated or genset-supported vehicles for the final leg, whether the delivery is a Dubai pharmacy distributor, a JAFZA free-zone facility or an up-country consignee across the GCC. Where cargo needs to pause between legs, temperature-controlled staging and cross-docking can be arranged through our warehousing and distribution network so the goods are never left in ambient conditions. [CLIENT TO PROVIDE: cold-storage capacity, temperature zones and any third-party bonded cold-store partners to name here.]

Customs Clearance Without Breaking the Chain

A temperature-controlled shipment can be undone at the border as easily as in transit — cargo sitting in an inspection queue is cargo drifting out of band. Speed and accuracy at clearance are therefore part of the cold-chain plan, not a separate task. Our brokers file through Dubai Customs' Mirsal 2 system with the correct HS codes, valuation and any permits your commodity requires, so declarations are clean the first time.

Perishables and pharma frequently need permits beyond a standard customs entry — food consignments and pharmaceutical products fall under UAE regulatory oversight, and the specific approvals depend on the product and the consignee's licences. We flag these requirements early and build the lead time into the plan. Standard UAE import duty is 5% with 5% VAT applied per the prevailing rules, though free-zone and re-export scenarios through JAFZA can change the picture. Our customs clearance team handles both import and export formalities so the reefer keeps moving. [CLIENT TO PROVIDE: any specific health-authority or municipality registrations Quality Express Freight holds or routinely files under.]

Documentation, Monitoring and Proof of Compliance

For regulated cargo, the paperwork is the product. A cool-chain shipment that arrives in perfect condition but cannot prove it stayed in band is still a compliance failure. We build documentation into every temperature-controlled booking: the agreed setpoint and excursion limits, the equipment and packaging specification, and temperature monitoring appropriate to the value and risk — from simple min/max indicators to electronic data loggers and, on high-value pharma, real-time telemetry.

The principles of Good Distribution Practice (GDP) shape how we approach pharmaceutical handling — qualified equipment, defined excursion procedures, trained handling and a documented chain of custody. Where a formal GDP-certified handling requirement applies to your programme, we will scope it explicitly with you and the carrier. [CLIENT TO PROVIDE: any GDP, ISO or cold-chain certifications, and named data-logger or telemetry platforms, to state here rather than imply.] At handover we compile the temperature record with the transport documents so your quality team has a single, auditable file per consignment.

Why Quality Express Freight for Reefer Cargo

Cold chain rewards experience and punishes improvisation. Four decades of freight forwarding through Dubai means we know where the risks sit on each mode — the plug gaps at the quay, the apron exposure at the airport, the inspection queue at the border — and we plan around them rather than react to them. As a door-to-door forwarder we own the whole journey, so there is no seam between the air or sea leg and the delivery vehicle where responsibility, and temperature control, can be lost.

We are multimodal by design, which means we recommend the mode that actually fits your commodity, budget and shelf life — air when time decides, reefer sea when volume decides, road for regional GCC lanes — rather than the mode that happens to be easiest to book. That sits within our broader freight forwarding and international shipping capability, so a temperature-controlled shipment can be combined with your wider logistics under one point of contact.
