FCL Shipping from Dubai: Full Container Load Ocean Freight, Done Properly
When your cargo fills a container — or when the value, sensitivity, or volume of your goods makes sharing space a bad idea — full container load (FCL) shipping is almost always the right call. At Quality Express Freight, we have spent 40 years moving FCL ocean freight out of Jebel Ali and into ports across the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia, the GCC and the wider Middle East. This page explains how FCL works from Dubai, when it beats LCL, which container types fit which cargo, and how to keep demurrage and detention from quietly eating your margin.
FCL is one pillar of our wider sea freight offering. If your volume does not yet justify a whole container, our LCL shipping service consolidates smaller consignments instead — but for most established importers and exporters shipping regularly, FCL is where the economics and the peace of mind line up.
What FCL Actually Means
In an FCL shipment, you book an entire container for your goods alone. The container is sealed at origin — often at your own facility or warehouse — and that seal is not broken until it reaches the consignee or a nominated customs examination point. Nobody else's cargo travels inside. Contrary to a common assumption, FCL does not require the container to be physically full; you are buying exclusive use of the box, not paying by the cubic metre. That single fact drives most of the advantages: fewer touch points, lower damage risk, cleaner customs handling, and far more predictable transit.
From Dubai, the overwhelming majority of FCL volume moves through Jebel Ali Port (Mina Jebel Ali), operated by DP World and the anchor of the JAFZA free zone. Jebel Ali is the largest container port in the Middle East and a primary hub on east–west trade lanes, which means frequent sailings, deep carrier choice, and competitive rates on the routes our clients use most. For cargo originating inside a free zone, we coordinate the gate-out and the transfer to port so your container moves without unnecessary dwell.
FCL vs LCL: When Full Container Wins
The instinct to "only pay for the space I use" pushes people toward LCL, but that logic breaks down faster than most shippers expect. As a rough rule of thumb, once your cargo exceeds roughly 13 to 15 cubic metres, FCL in a 20ft container often costs the same or less than LCL — because LCL is priced per cubic metre (or per revenue tonne) with consolidation, deconsolidation and handling fees layered on top.
Beyond the break-even volume, FCL wins decisively when:
- Your goods are fragile, high-value, or sensitive. No co-loading means no strangers' pallets shifting against yours, and no shared handling at a consolidation warehouse.
- You need speed and predictability. LCL cargo waits for a consolidation box to fill and must be deconsolidated at destination — both add days. FCL moves on the vessel schedule and clears as a single unit.
- Customs simplicity matters. One container, one sealed unit, one clean set of documents through Dubai Customs and the destination authority. Shared LCL containers can be held up by another shipper's paperwork or a flagged co-load.
- You ship regularly. Predictable lanes and container bookings let us secure better long-term rates than spot LCL pricing.
We will always run the honest comparison for your specific cargo rather than defaulting you into the higher-margin option. If LCL is genuinely cheaper for a given shipment, we will tell you.
Container Types and How to Choose
Getting the container right is where experience pays for itself. The wrong box means wasted space, refused cargo, or a demurrage bill. The common options:
- 20ft standard (20'GP): Internal capacity around 33 cubic metres, payload up to roughly 28 tonnes. Ideal for dense, heavy cargo — tiles, machinery parts, canned goods — where you hit the weight limit long before you run out of space.
- 40ft standard (40'GP): Around 67 cubic metres. The workhorse for general cargo of moderate density.
- 40ft high cube (40'HC): Same footprint as the 40ft but roughly a foot taller, giving about 76 cubic metres. The default choice for light, voluminous cargo — furniture, textiles, packaging — where you cube out before you weigh out.
- 45ft high cube: Maximum volume for palletised light cargo on lanes where the equipment and chassis are available.
Beyond the standard dry boxes, we handle reefer containers for chilled and frozen goods through our temperature-controlled service, open-top and flat-rack containers for over-height and over-width pieces that fall under project cargo and heavy lift, and properly documented equipment for regulated shipments under our dangerous goods handling. A quick conversation about your product's density, dimensions, and stackability tells us which box protects both your cargo and your budget.
Realistic FCL Transit Times from Jebel Ali
Transit time depends on the lane, the carrier's rotation, transhipment, and the season. These are realistic port-to-port ranges for FCL sailings from Jebel Ali — genuine estimates, not guarantees, and always subject to schedule and berth conditions:
- GCC and wider Middle East: short-sea and feeder services, typically a few days to around a week.
- Indian Subcontinent: roughly 5 to 12 days depending on port.
- North Europe (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Felixstowe) and the UK: approximately 18 to 28 days.
- US East Coast: approximately 28 to 40 days, often via transhipment.
- US West Coast: approximately 22 to 35 days.
- Australia (Sydney, Melbourne): approximately 20 to 30 days.
Add time for inland legs at both ends, customs, and any peak-season congestion or blank sailings. We give you a live, lane-specific window at the time of booking rather than a marketing number.
Demurrage and Detention: The Costs Nobody Budgets For
The two charges that surprise importers most are demurrage and detention, and they are not the same thing.
Demurrage accrues when your full container sits inside the port or terminal beyond the free time the carrier allows — usually because customs clearance or delivery orders were not ready when the box was discharged. Detention accrues once you have taken the container out of the terminal but keep it (loaded or empty) beyond the allowed free days before returning it to the line.
Both are charged per container per day and escalate on a rising scale. On busy lanes into and out of Jebel Ali, and especially at congested destination ports, they add up quickly. The way you avoid them is unglamorous and entirely within our control: prepare documentation early, lodge the customs declaration on time, arrange the delivery order in advance, and schedule haulage so the container moves the moment it is available. Four decades of doing exactly this is why our clients rarely see these charges. When free time is tight on a particular route, we tell you before you book, not after the invoice lands.
Documentation and Customs, Handled End to End
Every FCL shipment lives or dies on its paperwork. We prepare and check the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin where required, and any regulatory permits your commodity needs. HS code classification matters here: the code determines your duty rate, and in the UAE most goods attract 5% customs duty plus 5% VAT, calculated on the CIF value. Misclassification means either overpayment or a costly hold.
On the Dubai side we lodge declarations through Dubai Customs' Mirsal 2 platform, coordinating export or import clearance as your shipment requires — see our dedicated customs clearance service for the full detail. We work fluently with Incoterms 2020, so whether you are trading FOB, CIF, DAP or EXW, responsibilities and cost splits are clear before the container ever moves. If you would rather we manage the entire chain — including carrier booking, rate negotiation and multimodal coordination — our freight forwarding team owns the whole file.
Door-to-Door, Not Just Port-to-Port
An ocean rate that ends at the destination quay solves half your problem. Our door-to-door cargo service closes the gap: collection from your Dubai premises or free-zone facility, export clearance, the ocean leg, destination clearance, and final delivery to the consignee's door in the USA, Canada, the UK, Europe, Australia or the GCC. One accountable partner, one point of contact, one invoice — instead of a chain of handoffs where each party blames the next.
For clients who need to stage inventory, we can pair FCL with warehousing and distribution at either end, and for time-critical pieces we can move part of a consignment by air freight while the balance travels by sea.
